MIBIREM and ALL4BIOREM at Ecomondo 2025
Last week, MIBIREM and the ALL4BIOREM bioremediation cluster proudly participated in Ecomondo 2025, Europe’s leading Green Technology Expo and a key meeting point for the green and circular economy. Held from 4–7 November 2025 in Rimini, Italy, the event brought together industry experts, policymakers and researchers to exchange knowledge and showcase innovative solutions driving Europe’s ecological transition.
The 2025 edition featured 1,700 exhibitors across 166,000 square meters, welcoming participants from 120 countries and facilitating over 3,800 business meetings—a testament to its expanding global reach.
At a shared booth in Ecomondo 2025 with project partners NYMPHE, BIOSYSMO, EDAPHOS PHyBi, SYMBIOREM and BIOREM, MIBIREM and ALL4BIOREM presented the latest advances in European bioremediation research.

Innovation and Sustainablity for Contaminated Site Remediation
One of the highlights of Ecomondo was the session “Innovative and Sustainable Strategies for Contaminated Sites Remediation: Evolutions in National and International Applied Research,” chaired by Prof. Philippe Corvini (FHNW, Switzerland) — founder of the ALL4BIOREM cluster. Corvini opened the session by introducing the cluster’s mission and its network of ten Horizon Europe projects bringing together over 100 researchers and experts.
Since its launch, ALL4BIOREM has become a key voice in European bioremediation, organizing five public events that reached more than 500 stakeholders, industry representatives, and policymakers, and contributing position papers to advance the role of bioremediation in Europe’s green transition.
In his remarks, Prof. Corvini highlighted the strong collaboration among more than 100 researchers across Europe and the significant achievements of the Cluster to date — including three official workshops held alongside major international conferences such as BioRemid2023 (Basel), BioBio2024 (Prague), and the European Bioremediation Conference IX (Chania, Crete).
The session was well attended, demonstrating the high level of interest from the scientific community, industry representatives, and policymakers in sustainable remediation and biotechnological innovation.

Several projects from the Cluster — including MIBIREM, BIOSYSMO, SYMBIOREM, NYMPHE, pHYBi and EDAPHOS — presented their progress and shared insights on how European research is contributing to cleaner and more resilient environments.
In particular, Humberto Castillo-González from the University Marie et Louis Pasteur presented innovative approaches from the projects EDAPHOS and BIOSYSMO; Tommaso Nieri from the Italian based Next Technology Tecnotessile (NTT) introduced the Phybi project and Giulio Zanaroli (University of Bologna) showcased NYMPHE. These were followed by additional talks on cutting-edge remediation technologies, from in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) and in-situ enhanced reductive dechlorination (ERD) applications to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) treatment solutions and nature-based approaches.
MIBIREM Advancing Knowledge on Legacy Contaminants
In this session, Prof. Simona Di Gregorio from the University of Pisa presented the progress of MIBIREM, focusing on the project’s work on hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), a legacy contaminant of major concern.
Prof. Di Gregorio highlighted how MIBIREM is filling key knowledge gaps in understanding the molecular mechanisms of HCH degradation, which are essential for developing predictive tools and advancing bioremediation strategies across different ecosystems. “Our results bring us closer to practical, science-based solutions that can be applied across Europe’s contaminated sites,” she noted.

In addition, the MIBIREM project was featured in the Insights Magazine, which latest issue was also distributed at the Ecomondo expo in Rimini from 4 to 7 November 2025. You can view the article here: MIBIREM in Insight Magazine.
Soil Monitoring Law highlighted
MIBIREM and ALL4BIOREM were also represented in the session “States General for Soil Health – 4th Edition: Circular Bioeconomy and Opportunities for Soil Regeneration.” This session attracted policymakers, scientists, and stakeholders to discuss how the circular bioeconomy can enhance soil health, biodiversity, and climate resilience.
During the session “Funded Projects on Soil Regeneration,” Humberto Castillo-González (Université Marie et Louis Pasteur) presented ALL4BIOREM’s contributions under the theme “EU Horizon Projects Leading Soil Health Innovation.” He emphasized the importance of the new EU Soil Monitoring Law, which sets a common framework for member states to monitor, protect, and restore land. With an estimated 60% of European soils facing some level of contamination by 2025, the law marks a crucial step forward.

Better Soils-Better Life
Castillo-González highlighted how ALL4BIOREM projects play a practical role in testing whether current policies work in the field, ensuring solutions are economically viable and scalable. He stressed that “research does not stay in the lab — it is replicable and applicable throughout Europe,” linking soil restoration to sustainable economic development. His closing message resonated with Ecomondo’s spirit: “Healthy soils are the foundation of Europe’s green transition — better soils mean a better life.”
